Cairns is a regional city located in the state of Queensland, about 1,720 kilometres (1,070 mi) north-west from Brisbane. Captain James Cook first sighted the future site of Cairns in 1770. The expansion of the city was mainly supported by the sugar and tourism industry.

Cairns is very popular among tourists for its tropical climate and its numerous attractions. Activities in the area include white water rafting, snorkelling, diving, hiking and golf. Several theme parks have been constructed in Cairns. Among them are Rainforestation Nature Park and the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park.

The Great Barrier Reef is less than an hour away. Tropical rainforest can be experienced about 130 kilometres away at Cape Tribulation and in the Daintree National Park.
