Victoria
The Garden State
Victoria is a state situated in the south-eastern corner of Australia. Although Victoria is the smallest mainland state in the country, it is also the most densely populated and urbanised. It has a population of more than 5 million people, for a surface of about 228,000 square kilometres. More than 70% of the population of Victoria live in the capital city Melbourne.
Melbourne is known as the city of fashion, culture and food, and hosts the famous Melbourne Cup every year. It is Australia’s second largest city after Sydney and is particularly appreciated for shopping.
Despite its small size, Victoria hosts some of the best National Parks and stunning destinations of the country. Visitors enjoy natural attractions, such as The Twelve Apostles (on the Great Ocean Road), the Gippsland Lakes, the Grampians and Wilson's Promontory. The State also hosts the famous beaches of the Bellarine Peninsula, as well as the historic town of Queenscliff. Yarra Valley is very popular for its wineries and its lovely landscape. The Victorian Alpine Region gives the possibility to go skiing, while Phillip Island (far south) offers views of tiny penguins on the beach.
