Melbourne
The 'sporting and cultural capital'
Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria and is located in the country’s south-east, around Port Phillip Bay. With a population of over 3.74 million, it is the second most populous city in Australia.
Originally, Melbourne was as a small pastoral settlement around the Yarra River, founded in 1835. It expanded very quickly because of the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s. By 1865, Melbourne was the largest city in Australia, before being overtaken by Sydney in the early 20th century. Besides, Melbourne was the capital city of Australia from 1901 to 1927.
Melbourne is often called the "sporting and cultural capital" as it hosts the main cultural and sporting events. Melburnians have the reputation to be fond of football (Australian Rules football) and to have a sharp sense of fashion.
This vibrant city is full of life and offers numbers of restaurants, nice boutiques and galleries. Architecture is fascinating, displaying a blend of futuristic designs and original buildings.
